Government urged to provide more support for persons with disabilities

The Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities has highlighted what it says is an urgent need for the government to provide resources to facilitate persons with disabilities.

The council's executive director, Dr Christine Hendricks, says it is more important now that the Disabilities Act 2014 and its Regulations, are in effect.

The law took effect in February and calls for the promotion and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities.

According to Dr Hendricks, for the Act to be effective,  the government, as standard bearer, must ensure additional resources and services are provide through its ministries, departments and agencies to prevent penalties.

She disclosed that the council will hold a series of engagements with key stakeholders this week as it moves to create more awareness in responding to the needs of persons with disabilities.
