Road crashes putting strain on public hospitals

By Prince Moore

The number of people requiring treatment for injuries from road crashes is putting a strain on the country's public health facilities.

The issue is of greater concern in western parishes, especially with the holiday season fast approaching.

According to the National Road Safety Unit, St. James, Westmoreland and St. Ann have recorded the most road fatalities since the start of the year.

Dr. Delroy Fray, Clinical Coordinator for the Western Regional Health Authority, says hospital resources are stretched, particularly at Cornwall Regional Hospital in St. James.

He urged motorists to be "very cautious" on the roads during the festive season, insisting the hospital "cannot continue at this rate".

He noted that taxis seem to be involved in most of the crashes, causing "unnecessary injuries".
