Sentencing postponed for driver of garbage truck that crushed schoolboy

By Racquel Porter

The sentencing of the driver of the garbage truck that overturned killing Clan Carthy Primary School student Benjamin Bair in 2019, has been postponed until Monday.

Alten Brooks pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the Home Circuit Court under a plea deal arrangement.

When the matter was called up in the Home Circuit Court on Friday, his attorney Davion Vassell indicated that he needed additional time to peruse the social enquiry report.

The Nine Miles, Bull Bay, St. Andrew native, who is in his mid-50s, also had his bail extended.

Brooks was arrested and charged in 2019 after the seven-year-old schoolboy was crushed to death on October 28 on the grounds of the primary school.

Reports indicate that about 4:30 p.m., Benjamin was at school when the garbage truck that had been picking up trash on the school compound, hit a taxi, then overturned on the boy.

It was reported that, at the time of the incident, the truck was left unmanned and that it slipped down a slope and went into motion.
