Sixteen charged with gun, drug offences at Negril party

Sixteen people are facing charges of illegal possession of firearm and breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act following their arrest at a party in Negril, Westmoreland on Monday.

The group was attending an unauthorised entertainment event in West End that was raided by the security forces.

The police say a nine millimeter firearm with 10 live rounds, offensive weapons, 96 small bags of ganja, a bag containing white powdery substance resembling cocaine and 11 cellular phones were seized.

A 28-year-old bar operator, Sudan Tafari Lynch, and party promoter, 28-year-old Dennardo Bennett, have been charged for breaching the Noise Abatement Act.

Mr. Lynch was charged for using his premises to host an unauthorised event, while Mr. Bennett was charged for hosting an event without first obtaining a permit.  

The Negril Police are also reporting that other charges related to a spirit licence are still pending.
