System failure at NMIA results in hours of flight delays

A system failure during a scheduled maintenance Thursday, resulted in flights being delayed for several hours at Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston.

Radio Jamaica News was informed that there was a power outage from about 10 p.m. to just after 6 o'clock Friday morning.

Transport Minister Daryl Vaz told Radio Jamaica News that the emergency servicing of a switch, known as the Igranic Switchgear, caused the outage.

"I got a message sometime after 5 this morning that there was some programme maintenance to some equipment at the airport in relation to a switch which they were having major issues restoring, and it caused a power cut and they were having issues getting the switch to respond in relation to getting back the electricity."

Minister Vaz said he will be touring the airport next week in response to numerous complaints about its operations.
