TODSS calls gov't 'uncaring' for not extending traffic ticket reprieve

By Kimone Witter

The Government has been accused of being uncaring in its decision not to extend the reprieve period for people with outstanding traffic tickets.

Egerton Newman, President of the Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services (TODSS), is also insisting that there will be fallout and chaos in the public transport sector after Tuesday.

During debate on the Road Traffic Reprieve and Nullification of Prescribed Notices Act 2023 in the House of Representatives on Thursday, Opposition Leader Mark Golding suggested that the government extend the deadline from January 31 to April 30.

The bill was passed with three amendments and will be debated in the Senate Friday.

Mr. Newman said he is disappointed with the government's actions, as during meetings with several ministers to get further reprieve, he was made to believe that they understood the plight of motorists.

The TODSS president warned that when the reprieve ends next week, there will be "little or no public transport on the roads".

He said this will not be a demonstration or strike, explaining that some transport operators will have lost their licence while others will be hiding from police.

Mr. Newman was speaking Friday on Real Business on Power 106.

He said transport operators will be discussing the latest development at a meeting on Friday.
