Work to begin on 'significant' traffic changes in Mandeville

After more than ten years of discussions on a comprehensive traffic plan for the town of Mandeville, Manchester, a contract has been inked with the National Works Agency.

Work to facilitate the changes is expected to start by Friday.

The plan was discussed with stakeholders at a meeting at the NWA offices last week.

It includes changes to the directional flow of traffic, installation of traffic lights, construction of sidewalks, and changes to the schedule of delivery trucks.

Mayor of Mandeville, Donovan Mitchell, said the changes will significantly reduce travel time in the town centre, especially where motorists travelling on Villa Road will be now able to turn right at the intersection unto Hargreaves.

With regards to sidewalks, the mayor said some will be constructed particularly in school districts.

Mr. Mitchell said the schedule of delivery trucks has now been gazetted, and business operators should expect the changes soon.

Shirley Johnson, President of the Central Taxi Association, wants adequate parking for taxi operators to be included in the traffic plan, noting that taxi operators have been criticised for the disorder in the town.
