NUL Students boycott classes

Students vow to stay away from classes until results are released

By Liapeng Raliengoane

MASERU – The National University of Lesotho’s (NUL) students have denounced the delayed supplementary examinations results.

The students stayed away from classes yesterday and have revealed their intention to stay away until the University acts accordingly.

These include the results for completing students who are yet to know if they are graduating or not. The graduation ceremony is set for next week.

An interview with NUL Student Representative Council (SRC) Secretary Kama Ramatutu confirmed that the students went on strike yesterday and were still on stay-away at the time of the interview.

Ramatutu indicated that while they were still protesting, the management released a circular indicating that the results have been released, but when the students went to collect them, they found out that the printer had a problem, thus no results. He said they will, therefore, stay away until they have all received their supplementary results.

One student who has not received her supplementary results yet, and wished to remain anonymous, said it has been a strain waiting for the results while the graduation date has already been set. She related how they were told the results would be released last week but it never materialized. “The graduation event is set for next week and I don’t know whether to get ready for graduations or not because I haven’t received my results.”

NUL Information Director ‘Mamosa Moteetee could not comment as she was sick.

The circular dated 17th October 2022 reads as follows:

National University of Lesotho, Office of the Registrar, Notice to Staff and Students, REF/REG/ADM1.75-2022/28.

Release of supplementary Results and Resumption of Lectures

Staff and students of the national University of Lesotho are advised that results of the supplementary examinations have been released and faculties and the institute are now issuing result slips to students in years 1, 2 and 3 of study, and year 4 for BSC Pharmacy and LLB Five-year Programme.

Completing students may collect their transcripts from the Academic Office from 10:00AM on Tuesday 18th October 2022.

Lectures will therefore resume on Tuesday 18th October 2022.

When contacted for comment, the Registrar was “shocked” by these developments, saying she is not aware that the students are on stay away.

The National University of Lesotho is a non-profit public higher-education institution and was founded in 1945. Its vision is to be a vibrant African University nurturing thought leaders.
