The department of Malawi Prisons Service has revealed plans to counter the ongoing mobile money fraud that are happening in prisons across the country.
National spokesperson for the department Superintendent Chimwemwe Shaba said they are planning to procure and install gadgets in all major prisons in the country.
According to Shaba, the procurement process of the gadgets will be done very soon.
In August last year, a Reserve Bank of Malawi reported that 90 percent of mobile fraud cases emanate from prisons.
Meanwhile, Shaba said through routine search operations done every fortnight the number of phones confiscated from inmates has drastically gone down from an average of 60 to below 10 per operation.
