Seed-multiplication and wheat-planting event set

The importance of quality seed for food security will be highlighted at an event at Evaristus Shikongo Correctional Facility at Tsumeb tomorrow.

Efforts to develop high-quality seeds for sustainable agriculture will also be showcased.

The seed-multiplication and wheat-planting for sustainable food production event was organised by the University of Namibia (Unam) in collaboration with the Namibian Agronomic Board (NAB), the Namibian Correctional Service (NCS), and the World Food Programme (WFP).

According to a statement issued by Unam spokesperson Simon Namesho, the event will be attended by dignitaries, including vice president and Unam chancellor Nangolo Mbumba.

It will view a successful potato seed-multiplication programme planted at Evaristus Shikongo Correctional Facility.

“Guests will also see the planting of wheat for a seed-multiplication programme on eight hectares at the correctional facility, before the signing of an agreement between Unam and Evaristus Shikongo Correctional Facility,” Namesho says.

Other dignitaries expected to attend the event are the deputy minister of home affairs, immigration, safety and security, Daniel Kashikola, NCS commissioner general Raphael Tuhafeni Hamunyela, NAB research and policy development manager Gerson Kampungu, and WFP country representative George Fedha.
