Google fights court order to change Play Store amid Epic Games dispute

Google has asked a US appeals court to stop a judges order that would make them change their Play Store app. This comes after Epic Games won a case against them about ten months ago

The order‚ given around ten days ago says Google must let other app stores be downloaded through Play Store‚ and share its big app library with other stores. Google thinks this is too hard to do in just three weeks and could make Android less safe

Google said to the court “The changes the judge wants would hurt Android users‚ app makers‚ and phone companies that use Android.“ They added that the task is “Herculean“ and creates an “unacceptable risk“ for Android

Epic Games who made the game “Fortnite“ said Google is just trying to keep control and keep charging high fees. They want the changes to happen fast so app makers and users can have more choices

This is Googles last ditch effort to protect their control over Android and continue extracting exorbitant fees

The court will hear Googles request to pause the changes on 10/20/24. If they dont stop it‚ Google must make the changes by 11/1/24

About four years ago Epic also sued Apple but mostly lost that case. Apple had to make some changes‚ but theyre still arguing about how much to change

Both Google and Epic have big-name lawyers working on this case. It looks like this fight over app stores and fees will keep going for a while
