Venezuela detains more US citizens, raising concerns

In a recent statement Diosdado Cabello‚ Venezuelas Interior Minister said that three more Americans have been detained for supposed terrorist activities (he didnt give a specific date for these detentions)

This news comes about 10 months after a significant prisoner exchange between Venezuela and the United States. In that swap‚ the government of Nicolas Maduro freed dozens of prisoners – including 10 Americans. In return‚ the US released Alex Saab‚ a Colombian businessman whos close to Maduro

Just a month ago‚ authorities arrested several foreigners:

  • Four Americans
  • Two Spaniards
  • One Czech citizen

The US State Department confirmed that “a US military member“ was among those detained

Human rights groups in Venezuela are raising alarms about whats being called a “revolving door“ – where authorities are making new arrests (including of foreign nationals) despite the releases that happened late last year

These developments are causing worry about the state of US-Venezuela relations‚ which have been strained for years. The situation is complex – with both countries trying to balance their interests while dealing with ongoing political tensions
