DADI Toka Jr has been declared chairman-elect for the Motu-Koita Assembly for the next five years.
Mr Toka defeated nine other candidates contesting the chairman’s seat, beating his nearest rival and only woman candidate Beatrice Geua Mahuru by 3240 votes in the final count.
He polled a total of 6214 votes while Mahuru polled 2974 votes. Former chairman Miria Naime Ikupu finished in third place with 2458 votes.
“I have heard and understood the people’s need during my in-house awareness meetings, and I am not going to sit and wait but make things happen.
“The priority for the office is transparency and good governance, and I will be working closely with my members and put everything into perspective,” he said.
Motu-Koita Assembly election returning officer Terence Hetinu made the declaration of Mr Toka at 12.33pm, was witnessed by the Deputy Electoral Commissioner Simon Sane, NCD LLG provincial adviser James Ume and deputy city manager Ted Lulu.
Mr Hetinu congratulated Mr Toka Jr for winning and thanked other candidates for contesting.
He also thanked the people of Motu-Koita for understanding the preferential voting system and also setting a precedent that must be followed by other LLGs.
A total of 18,379 voters were registered (12,933 from the West and 5446 East wards) however, only 12,933 people cast their votes in this election.
Mr Hetinu also congratulated the East women’s representative Geua Kwalahu from Pari village and West women’s representative Mea Reia Lou Isaac for their election as first timers to the Assembly.
From the initial 14 ward members who were elected, three had retained their seats Arutu Bake (Kira Kira), Dikana Boge (Poreporena Laurabada) and Opao Foo Udia from Tatana village while the new members-elect were Airi Igo (Taurama-Pari), Gaudi Vagi Frank (Pari-Taoata), Veata Patana ( Mahuru), Tabu Gaudi (Korobosea),Rahe Rau Maraki, (Vabukori), Eure Kea Eure (Poreporena Lahara), Reu Gorohu (Elevala Laurabada), Gavera Areni (Elevala Lahara), Nao Mase Oala (Elevala Mirigini), Ake Karavea (Araira) and Edward Collette Jr (Baruni).
