Judge considers Paraka bench warrant of arrest

Justice Teresa Berrigan yesterday said that if convicted lawyer Paul Paraka misses court again today, she would issue a bench warrant to arrest him.

She made these remarks in Waigani National Court when the case returned for Mr Paraka to present his doctor’s report yesterday, however, Mr Paraka did not appear in court.

Public prosecutor Helen Roalokona said that Mr Paraka had informed her through email that he was going through his medical procedure yesterday and therefore could not be in court.

Ms Roalokona also said that Mr Pararka had given similar reasons previously which has been delaying the case.

Justice Berrigan then made directions for the prosecutions to inform Mr Paraka that she would be issuing a bench warrant if he does not turn up today.

Mr Paraka was found guilty of misappropriating K162 million belonging to the State earlier this year in May.

His matter returned to court on Monday for submissions on sentence where he made an application in court requesting for an adjournment as he was sick.

Justice Berrigan then directed him to attain an angiogram from his doctor and present to court yesterday which he failed to do.

According to Mr Paraka his illness rises from complications in his blood vessels.

Berrigan on Monday said that, the doctor’s report or angiogram is important for her to see and make direction accordingly.
