Justice and Attorney General and Justice Sector to lead reform

By TODAGIA KELOLA

The Justice and Attorney Generals Department and all line Agencies in the Law and Justice sector must play a big part in the Marape Stevens Government vision statement in turning PNG in to being the richest black Christian nation in the world.

That’s the challenge from Attorney General and Deputy Prime Minister Davis Stevens

The Department which also oversees a number of Independent Constitutional offices like the Public Solicitor, Public Prosecutor, Solicitor General, State Solicitor, Village Courts, Magisterial Services, Public Curator and other Justice sector Agencies were challenged to be the beacon of hope for a change in the country’s direction after 40 years of Independence.

In a very enlightening speech during his welcome luncheon, attended by the Departments top Management and Constitutional Office Holders, Deputy Prime Minister and Attorney General Davis Stevens reiterated his Governments position and statement for a change of direction for the country after 40 years.

“Our people demand nothing less, they want a nation that is rich, a nation that is prosperous, a nation where they are happy, a nation where there is peace…. now is the time for us to arrest , the decline , deterioration and decay process and put an end to that and turn the process around , and it starts here in the Department of Justice and Attorney General.”

He explained that his re-appointment as Justice Minister and Attorney General after resigning from that office a month ago was a generous one from the Prime Minister but his elevation to the Deputy Prime Ministers post was a surprise.

“I’m very Honored and grateful to the leaders especially the Prime Minister for the honor to be given the DPM post. This one, I didn’t ask and I didn’t expect, but I remembered my mothers advice some time back when I was leaving to attend Sogeri National High School, when she told me to humble myself before God   and she said God will lift you up”

And he stressed that the elevation of the position of the Attorney General to be with that of the DPM is a lift not only for him but the entire Department, Constitutional Offices and Agencies in the Justice Sector.

“ It means that if you can remember when I was previously here as Attorney General in our meeting at the ground floor, where I stated that a time must come where the Law and Justice Sector must be elevated to a central role and a leading and important role in running and governing this country, that statement was made at that time as a hope and expectation , today I stand here very humbled and honored , because just this decision to elevate the AG position together with the DPM is an answer to our expectation and for those of us who are serious about the new direction that our nation must take”

He said “ the fights that have been abandoned, the issues of injustice , the lack of attention to the rule of law, institutional integrity, democratic ideals of human rights and all this that we have allowed our nation to divert”

Secretary for the Department, Dr Eric Kwa in his welcome address echoed his Departments assurance to support him and also to take up the challenge now that their office will also be the country’s second highest office.
