National Road Authority to come under Works Dept

ONE of the major reforms Works Department is undertaking will be taking over the functions of the National Road Authority.

Works and Implementation Minister Michael Nali made this announcement recently, saying it was not necessary to have different departments sharing similar responsibilities.

“We made decision to NEC (National Executive Council) to repeal the National Road Authority Act and the organisation will not be operating anymore by 2019,” said Nali.

He said under the department, the NRA would become a division with the same responsibility with minimal staffing.

Mr Nali said the MPs are also spending large amounts of money under the district services improvement program into the districts to build infrastructures.

“Despite the country going through tough times, the department is managing to oversee emergency works in the Highlands, especailly roads are completed well.

This includes parts of Southern Highlands, Enga and Hela provinces affected by the recent quake.”

He said the K3 billion Highlands Highway road building was awaiting response from Asia Development Bank.

Mr Nali said when finalised, a recommendation would be made to Central Supply and Tenders Board for a contract to be awarded subject to NEC approval.

Apart from road maintenance the department is also working on the an outstanding bridge project in the Momose region.
