Oea keen to use VFL Grand Final experience with PNG Mosquitoes

AFLPNG Mosquitoes representative Hewago Paul ‘Ace’ Oea and the Gold Coast Suns VFL team have surely ink down a special achievement in the club’s history book after winning the 2023 Smithy’s Victorian Football League grand final on Sunday.

Suns defeated rivals Wereibee with a 17.10 (112) to 14.9 (93) full time score and Oea also played a key part in the general attacking plays.

When asked about how the game experience of playing in the grand final as well as how far he has progressed with the club (Gold Coast Suns) will boost his game confidence heading into next year’s International Cup, Oea says it is all about following through the process step by step.

“When I first got here (to Australia and Gold Coast Suns) it was a bit challenging at times. You have to follow through…you won’t learn everything quick, step by step.

“I guess for me like being in my third or fourth year, something we’ve learnt in club I have never learn before, to adjust to ask questions and learn about little things is very important,” says Oea.

He says getting the little things right was more about building confidence into footy career.

Prior to facing Wereibee, Oea says they (Wereibee) continues to set the benchmark all
throughout the year.

“They play aggressive footy and when we played them down in Melbourne, we played our best in the three quarters but we can’t just play three quarters, we had to play the full four quarters,” says Oea who also had to grind in with speedy game momentum with fellow teammates to shut down Wereibee’s gam plan and pulling off the historical win.

Oea’s message to young AFL kids coming through the AFL pathways is to enjoy every experience.

“My advice is to do what you are doing now, like be happy playing footy and what is after footy like education…it is a big one.”
