Paunda mini hydro back online

Electricity supply from the Paunda mini-hydro in the Western Highlands province was brought back online last weekend after four years being shutdown.
Chairman of PNG Power Limited (PPL) Peter Nupiri announced the hydro station brought back online adding six additional megawatts (MW) into the PPL Ramu Grid.
“Recently we have just turned on last week the Paunda hydro which has been out for four years. The second turbine has been out for four years and we have just turned that on last weekend.
“That is an amazing turnaround from when we first came onboard as that machine was sitting down at the wharf in Lae.
“We took it down to Sydney, we had it repaired, brought it back and now it is up and running adding six more MW into the Ramu grid.
“That was only in February this year, and I want to thank the PPL acting managing director Carolyn Blacklock for taking the initiative, as she had to spend some of her own money to send it down there,” Mr Nupiri said.
He said apart from Paunda, Yonki dam in the Eastern Highlands also had an additional 10MW added on the same weekend.
Acting managing director of PPL Ms Carolyn Blacklock described the accomplishment as a team effort by PPL engineers.
“When I started here in February and with the chairman and the boards support we were able to use what money we had and these are not donor funded.”
She said the additional power output would displace the company’s current reliance on independent power producers (IPPs) currently supplying the Ramu grid.
“When people say to me can you really reduce the tariff, I say yes we can because we have PNG power engineers committed to delivering these projects,” Ms Blacklock said.
