People need bridge to link communities

THE people of Lower Wage in the Magarima District, Hela Province, and the people of Upper Nipa in Southern Highlands, need a footbridge to connect their communities.

The people said the Marko suspension footbridge built by the Late Marabe Makiba, the father of the current Minister for Bougainville Affairs Manasseh, during his term as the Member of Parliament, has deteriorated and is not usable.

The people said that the Mako Bridge connects the people from Hombala in the Lower Wage Local Level Government in the Magarima District, in the Hela Province and Ungubu-Haralinja in the Nipa-Kutubu District of the Southern Highlands.

The Bridge is the short cut for the people of Hombala to cross into Ungubi-Haralinja to access services in Nipa and Mendi and is also a bridge for people living in the area to visit families and friends on either sides.

However, the locals say the bridge built by the late Marabe Makiba has deteriorated while many parts of the suspension bridge has been washed away, making crossing very difficult over the fast flowing river.

Recent Mako bridge made of cane after the previous one was washed away.

The people are requesting for kind hearted individuals and organisations to come forward to rescue them and build a footbridge so they can be able to move freely.

A recent social media post has also appealed for kind hearted people to assist the people build the bridge, as they need the bridge badly.

“Serving the needy people is serving Christ.

Only the God Almighty can wipe away our tears and give us peace.

We pray and have faith in Christ that one day, we shall overcome this suppressing situation.

“Year after year, month after month, week after week, and day after day we wait, hoping someone will come and save us.

“Many times, MP’s executives instruct us to write project proposals for this footbridge and we submit proposals, but they tell lies but God will not forsake us, he will bless us,” the post read.
