Basketball
By KEVIN TEME

PNG Premier Men’s Basketball League are the inaugural champions of the 3×3 men’s national All stars basketball championships.
They beat Daru 15-14 straight on the full time buzzer.
It was sneaky point guard Obert Muri that stole the show when he short the winning point just a second left on the clock to break the hearts of the Daru fans, supporters and players that packed Taurama Aquatic Center in Port Moresby. Muri who had to leave his semi final rugby league match at Kaugere and opted to play the 3×3 men’s basketball challenge despite being named the PMBL men’s team gold.
The PMBL men’s team gold lost in the semi final to their team Red but for Muri, he wanted to venture into this new 3×3 concept which will also be included in the Pacific Games squad for Samoa.
While he knew the chances of making the five by five men’s national team were slim, Muri opted to play in the 3×3 and that rewarded him the selection in the train on squad for the PNG Men’s 3×3 national team after his stellar performance that also won him the player of the tournament.
PMBL head coach Dia Muri said young Obert had to sacrifice his rugby league semi final match and came to play the game and this did wonders for the team.
“Now wonder he came for a purpose and at the right time to win us this game,” Dia said to his young brother Obert who was also his teammate in the PMBL 3×3 challenges.
