PNG Lewas claim back-to-back wins

PNG Lewas bounce back into the winners circle with back-to-back match victories at the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup East Asia-Pacific region qualifier in Port Villa, Vanuatu yesterday.

The nine wicket win by PNG (1/64, with 73 balls remaining) over Samoa (10/61) is yet again another confidence boost for the Kaia Arua PNG Lewas skippered side ahead of today’s (8:30am) match against Japan.

The opening match last Friday saw PNG losing by five wickets to host, Vanuatu, but manage to defeat Cook Islands by 100 runs (PNG 2/167, Vanuatu 10/67) followed by yesterday’s win over Samoa.

PNG Lewas right arm off break bowler Sibona Jimmy took the man of the match award in the match against the Samoans following her impressive four wickets for 16 runs in just four overs.

Lewas head coach Tatendu Taibu was proud of the team’s effort.

“I think this was our first match which I can say we started the fight and continued to play our way from start to finish!

“I’m proud of our girls,” says Taibu.

Assistant coach Mahura Dai says their opponent (Samoa) were all out for 61.

“Then the girls (PNG Lewas) backed themselves in batting passing the score at 7.4 overs with one out (Naoani Vare 1-43) before Brenda Tau (17 runs off 20) and Tanya Ruma (16 runs off 8) steered them to victory.

“The girls did well with both bowling and batting.”

“That is the standard we want and we must play to our standard and not to the other team’s standard,” says Dai.
