PNGDF helps with volcano aftermath

The recent eruption of Mount Bagana was the reason the Defence Force was called in on humanitarian grounds. The PNG Navy was called in to assist with relief efforts after President Ishmael Toroama asked for help from Prime Minister James Marape.

The PNG Defence Force and other armed forces have not been allowed into Bougainville since the end of the Bougainville Crisis in 1997 and the signing of the Bougainville Peace Agreement in 2001.

Under the Peace Agreement, engagement of the PNG armed forces in the region can only be allowed through approval by the Bougainville Government.

Ash falls from Mt Bagana in central Bougainville collapsed many traditional houses and various reports said that more than 7000 people needed temporary accommodation.

Mt Bagana's eruption in early July was the first time this had occurred in 11 years.

Apart from ash destroying homes, it also polluted waterways and ruined food gardens.
