New Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan said the presence of Bougainville President Ishmael Toroama and his delegation in the province has lifted the spirit of New Ireland Province to push for autonomy.

Sir Julius said the province will bring to the Parliament an amendment bill to the Constitution to give effect to grant and establish autonomous governments in PNG, giving provinces like New Ireland, East New Britain and Enga some level of independence away from Waigani.

The autonomous arrangement will enable a shared power between the National Government and still remains part of PNG. Another bill that will be introduced by Sir Julius is the Mining Amendment Bill 2023 which will return the rights of ownership of minerals and resources to the landowners.

Mr Toroama, while giving an update on Bougainville, said Bougainville’s political aspirations has always been driven by the people.

He thanked Sir Julius for giving him opportunity to share his government’s plans.
