Trio escape from prison van in Port Moresby

BY MIRIAM ZARRIGA

Three prisoners from Bomana jail made a daring run from the Correctional Services prison van on Wednesday afternoon after their court appearances at Waigani in Port Moresby.

The three, identified as John Fabian, 35, from Morobe, John Yomba, 28, and Gabby John, 21, from Chimbu, made their escape by using a sharp implement to force open the door of the prison van.

NCD metropolitan commander Chief Superintendent Perou N’Dranou confirmed the incident, saying the police units were notified just before 3pm on Wednesday afternoon.

“From the three that made their escape, John was recaptured by police and CS officers,” Mr N’Dranou said.

“The other two — Fabian and Yomba — are now on the run, with police continuing their investigations into the incident and how the men got their hands on the object used to force open the door.”

Mr N’Dranou said the actions of one of the prisoners stopped more prisoners escaping from the prison van.

“One prisoner held the others back and managed to close the door to allow CS officers to lock the door and look for the three escapees,” he said.

“If it weren’t for the quick action of this prisoner, other prisoners would be on the run.”

He said the actions of the public were disappointing as they did nothing when they saw the three men escaping. He said they only stood and watched.

“Unfortunately, that is now the attitude of the public to not intervene when they see something is not right,” he said.

Acting CS Commissioner Stephen Pokanis said he is yet to be briefed as he is out of Port Moresby on duty travel.

The three men were facing armed robbery charges. Police are investigating the incident.
