UN to support PNG govt and businesses

Take the initiatives by the Prime Minister on board and piece together changes, says Finance and Rural Development Minister Charles Abel.

Mr Abel was responding to the business community yesterday after they welcome the new initiative and priorities set by the government under the James Marape as Prime Minister.

He said, “PM has made it very clear to assure you that this collaboration with the private sector is fundamental to the way forward and is fundamental to improving prosperity for our people.

I want to say there’s naturally always going to be some apprehension when you have change politically and other wise…

PM wants us to do something a little bit better particularly to empower our people and engage them more meaningfully and these are some of the messaging coming from the new government and the PM which is critical that we take the ques from that,” Mr Abel said

UN Resident Coordinator to PNG Gianlucca Rampolla said the United Nations will continue its support to PNG businesses and government.

He said, “We are continuing to work with partners like the government and it’s a good thing to see the prime minister bringing in new ideas and that pushes us as development partners to re-energise ourselves in this relationship with government especially with policy and legal framework that we operate in.”

Nambawan Super Limited chairman Anthony Smare, in sharing the same sentiments, said:

“We strongly welcome the results on social development.

The business council has been doing some work on the SDG’s and with the dashboard and core priorities.

For us it’s about aligning the way we work as the business community with the social imperatives for the country and that is where the SDGs are extremely important.”

He said clearly the government has its focus now on social development especially with how it’s empowered with the social ministries and that that clearly accords with the work that they have been doing.

“We would like to support that.

The issue now is having those forums where we can come and provide that support to the work that you are trying to do,”he said.
