Women: Now we can read and write

EIGHT illiterate women are now able to read and write after attaining their adult literacy certificate.

The women from Pung Lutheran Congregation of Rabi Parish, Engkal Circuit in Hagen District of Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea can now read confidentially in Tok Pisin.

Thanks to Pung Lutheran Church evangelist Peter Hasueta for teaching these women with adult literacy training that started in July 2022 and ended in August this year.

The women graduated last week and received their attainment certificate in adult literacy.

ELC Hagen District Goodnews Director Rev Kapi Sirune said the training empowers these women to participate in church organised programs and activities because they can read, write and understand the Bible, other religious books or documents written in Tok Pisin without supervision.

He said this is a new chapter in their life and the happiness, joy and satisfaction they have in their heart is infinite.

“It’s a life changing experience for them and it’s their cry, longing need to read and write one day despite being married, have children or even grandchildren,” he said.
