World coconut day celebrated

World Coconut Day was observed last Saturday with life skills sessions in the Malagunan 1 village in Rabaul district, East New Britain Province.

The owner of the Rabaul Copra and Cocoa Buyers and Exporters, Rosemary Sovek, who initiated the ceremony, said that key stakeholders in the agriculture industry should support such occasion.

The community is organising a SME Coconut Expo in December this year to mark the 5th anniversary.

The activities during the festival, according to Mrs Sovek, include teaching children how to husk and scrape coconuts as life skills.

“Additionally, adults and kids between the ages of 5 and 15 were taught how to make baskets and mats out of coconut palm leaves,” she said.

Basic items like sachets of rice, salt, sugar, noodles, and cookies were awarded as rewards for the finest basket or mat made.

The theme for this year’s event was ‘Sustaining the coconut sector for the present and future generation’.

Mrs Sovek is a person living with disabilities (PLWD), but she does not let her impairment prevent her from participating in community activities.

“We are calling on the Kokonas Indastri Koperesen (KIK) and the agriculture sector to support such event in the communities,” she said.

“The more support that we have, it will boost the interest of the locals so they can engage more in the agricultural practices in the community.”
