MBABANE – Eswatini referees have received a fair increase in their match allowances.

This is as per a correspondence that was shared by the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) this past Friday. It is expected to be implemented on August 16, 2023. “All members and stakeholders of EFA are hereby informed that the EFA at its Executive Committee meeting, in a holistic review of all applicable allowances for the practice of the sport, football business, decided on the following rates as applicable for match officials (referees and match commissioners) in football matches,” said EFA CEO Frederick Mngomezulu.

“All travel allowances for the above-mentioned categories have been placed at E3.50 per kilometre travelled from centralised locations as published by government. The travel arrangements remain the same,” he said. He said regional football association league matches’ allowances, including travel allowances (where applicable) and travel arrangements (where applicable), for their respective categories would be decided by the respective regional football associations. Referee allowance per match will be E400, while match commissioner will get E420 for elite league matches. For National First Division (NFD), they will pocket E240 and E260 for match commissioner.

The ‘men in black’ are expected to rake in E600 and E680 for match commissioners. The highest payment for each game will be when a match official officiates during a senior men’s, national team international friendly, where a referee will take home E770 and E790 for match commissioner. The issue of the allowances had been a concern for referees for years. The revised figures show an average increase of E50 for Premier League referees.
