Mother buried her newborn daughter alive in her garden in Ukraine ‘because she did not want her’ 

A mother has been arrested for allegedly burying her newborn baby daughter alive just after giving birth.

The 24-year-old woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, buried her child in the backyard near her house in the village of Lipetskoe in Podilskyi District in southern Ukraine's Odessa Oblast region.

According to police, the mother delivered a healthy baby girl who weighted 4.2 kilograms (9.2 lbs) at home.

Just after giving birth, the mother put a plastic bag on the baby's head to not see her face.

After that, the woman cut the umbilical cord and put her baby into another plastic bag.

She took the bag with her newborn daughter and went in the backyard.

There the woman dug a pit, put her crying child into it and buried it alive.

After getting rid of the child, the mother returned to the house and lay down on the bed as she felt ill.

Her sister living in a neighbouring house came to check on her an hour later and found her suffering from a high fever and severe pain in lower abdominal. The sister called an ambulance.

The mother was rushed to hospital and underwent a medical examination.

She tried to trick the medical staff saying that she was six months pregnant and had a miscarriage.

Podolsk Regional Hospital spokeswoman Svetlana Sergeevna said: 'She [the mother] told us that she was six months pregnant and had a miscarriage.

'She was nervous and her story was suspicious so we called the police.'

According to police, the mother delivered a healthy baby girl who weighted 4.2 kilograms (9.2 lbs) at home. During the interrogation, a detective asked the mother why she buried her newborn child and she replied: 'I did not want this baby'

During an interview with the officers, the mother said that she had a miscarriage and showed the place where she had buried her baby.

But a forensic medical examination revealed that the mother had a full-term pregnancy and the baby was alive after being delivered.

According to forensics, the newborn girl died of suffocation after being buried alive.

After the truth surfaced, the mother confessed in full and said to the police: 'The baby was born alive. She was crying.

'I put a plastic bag on her head and cut the umbilical cord.

'Then I wrapped her in cloth and put it into another plastic bag.

'Then I buried her.

'She was alive when I was burying her.'

During the interrogation, a detective asked the mother why she buried her newborn child and she replied: 'I did not want this baby.'

Police spokeswoman Lubov Gordievska said: 'The woman gave birth to an alive baby after a full-term pregnancy.

After the truth surfaced, the mother confessed in full and said to the police: 'The baby was born alive. She was crying

'Because she did not want the baby, she put it into a plastic bag and buried it in the backyard near her house.

'Forensic medical examination revealed that the baby died of suffocation.'

Detectives say the woman had planned the murder of the baby. According to them, she did not register her pregnancy in a local hospital and hid the true term of her pregnancy even from relatives.

The woman, who has an 18-month-old son, was charged with premeditated murder and put under house arrest.

She faces five years in prison if found guilty. The investigation is ongoing.
