Five people were injured and one died during a shooting at a softball game at a park in Atlanta on Sunday, officials said. Among the injured is a 6-year-old boy, Atlanta Deputy Mayor Charles Hampton Jr. said at a news conference.
Officers were dispatched to his park in Dunbar, Atlanta, around 7:00 p.m. on sunday. "What we know so far is that there was some kind of baseball, softball game going on, some sort of altercation going on, and then we know there was a shootout," he said. Hampton said.
A 30-year-old man was taken to hospital and is now dead, Hampton said. A 6-year-old child was also injured and taken to hospital in critical condition. Hampton said detectives are still investigating whether there was a connection between the six victims.
"At present, other victims known to us are stable," he said.
"We are asking citizens to resolve conflicts without weapons," said Hampton. “We ask people to go away and let the past pass. But whenever a tragedy like this happens, any death is a tragedy. This is not a shooting scene, please leave your guns at home.”
Birmingham police are also investigating a murder following the weekend's shootings. Officer Truman Fitzgeraldsaid in a Facebook video that he received a call to gunshots shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday. They found an adult female victim of what appeared to be a gunshot wound in a parking lot.
He had four other victims taken to local hospitals.
