Barry Bonds not surprised by Aaron Judge’s home run slump: ‘61 is the hardest one’

Barry Bonds can tell the pressure is on for Aaron Judge.

The controversial Giants legend joined ESPN’s “Kay-Rod Cast” during Sunday’s Red Sox-Yankees game and discussed the Judge’s quest to hit 61 (or more) homers to tie (or surpass) Roger Maris’s American League and franchise mark.

“Trying to get to that 61 is the hardest one,” said Bonds, who owns the MLB homer record at 73. “Trying to get to that one. Once he gets to it, he’s probably going to hit five or six in a row after that.

“But trying to get to there, that’s the hardest one, that 61 is going to be the hardest. It’s a big moment on 61.”

Bonds hit his 73 home runs in 2001, but the feat comes with controversy due to the seven-time MVP’s alleged steroid use.

Judge, who doubled and walked, was denied a third at-bat on Sunday when the game was called because of rain in the top of the seventh inning, giving the Yankees a 2-0 win. Sunday’s game against the Red Sox is Judge’s fifth-straight without a homer. He hit his 60th on Sept. 20 against the Pirates.
