Bears hit with more QB chaos before Jets game as Trevor Siemian gets injured

The Bears’ quarterback situation somehow got even worse on Sunday before they even began their game against the Jets.

Trevor Siemian injured his oblique in warmups, and it was bad enough that the Bears announced that Nathan Peterman would start instead. But the team later said the starting quarterback would be a game-time decision, and Siemian ultimately started.

It was just more chaos at the position for the Bears, who are without first-stringer Justin Fields after he suffered a separated left shoulder with a partially torn ligament last week. He’s inactive for the Jets game.

Siemian signed with the Jets in 2019, making one start after three years with the Broncos. He spent 2020 with the Titans but didn’t play before making six appearances (four starts) last season for the Saints. The 30-year-old lost all four of those starts.

Peterman, 28, has made four career NFL starts. A former favorite of Jon Gruden’s with the Raiders, Peterman appeared in just one game last season without attempting a pass, and he attempted five passes in one game in 2020. A 2017 fifth-round pick by the Bills, Peterman made two starts for Buffalo during his rookie season and two more starts in 2018. He’s 71-for-135 with 573 yards, three touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in his career.

Fields, 23, had 1,642 yards passing with 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions this season while being sacked 40 times. He also has 834 yards rushing with seven scores on the ground.
