Cardinals implode in ninth to lose first wild card game vs. Phillies

Things aren’t looking too good for the Cardinals.

St. Louis imploded during its first wild card game against the visiting Phillies on Friday, losing 6-3. The Cardinals let up six runs — all in the ninth inning. It’s also the first time in Cardinals history St. Louis lost while up by two or more runs in the postseason, according to ESPN.

The Cardinals looked to close the game out with closer Ryan Hesley on the mound, who had a 1.25 ERA throughout the season.

Philadelphia, though, took advantage of the opportunity after St. Louis switched pitchers to Andre Pallante, scoring five runs with some stellar base running, timely singles, a hit by pitch and sacrifice fly. The big hit was Jean Segura’s go-ahead two-run single that scored Harper and Castellanos.

The Cardinals tried to rally back in the bottom of the ninth, scoring one run through on a Nolan Goran RBI single.

The Cardinals will have a chance to even up the wild card series at home on Saturday.
