Felony charges have been filed against a food delivery driver caught on video driving his Toyota Prius into a worker during an apparent quarrel over social distancing outside a Lakeview restaurant, according to Chicago police.
Aamir Mohammed, 30, is accused of striking the woman outside Ms. T’s Southern Fried Chicken in the 3300 block of North Broadway around 6:15 p.m. Friday, police said.
A 40-second video posted to YouTube picks up after the quarrel has already begun and shows two women standing along the curb blocking Mohammed’s car from traffic. “He threatened to run me over!” said a woman standing just off camera, exchanging words with Mohammed who was behind the wheel and wearing a face mask, police said.
Toward the end of the video, the man identified by police as Mohammed drives into one of the women, appearing to knock her down. The 24-year-old woman suffered injures to her shoulders, pelvis, arms and head, police said.
In an interview with WGN-TV, Ms. T’s owner Nita Tanner identified her daughter as the woman who was struck by the Prius. She said the incident escalated when the driver was asked to wait outside for social distancing reasons. The man kicked the door and damaged it, she said.
Mohammed left the scene but turned himself into police Saturday evening. He was charged with aggravated battery, failure to report an accident with injuries and driving without a license.
In a statement, GrubHub said Mohammed had cleared all of its background checks and had no prior reports of misconduct. “We are shocked and appalled by these reports, and our hearts go out to the person injured and her family.”
