Drew Barrymore’s Reaction to ‘Grow Old With You’ in ‘The Wedding Singer’ Was Real, Adam Sandler Says He “Wasn’t Allowed” to Sing It to Her Sooner

Drew Barrymore welcomed her “cinematic soulmate” Adam Sandler onto today’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Showwhere the two revealed some fun facts while reminiscing about their time working on classic rom-coms like The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates.

During the “Drewber” segment, Barrymore picked Sandler up in her car, where they drove around reflecting on their 24 years of friendship. When the talk show host asked if the actor could choose one movie to sum everything up in a time capsule, he asked, “Like, in 50 First Dates, I made you a tape every day, do you remember that?”

“No, I don’t remember that,” Barrymore joked, referring to her character’s short-term memory loss that prompted Sandler’s character to try and make her fall in love with him again every day.

“You’re good!” Sandler replied before going on to answer the question. “I worked with this young lady one time. I met her at the Newsroom Cafe. She came in, she had stylish hair, a little pinkish. She came in, we jammed on a movie idea, we got together, we shot it, we had the best time ever.”

He was referring to the 1998 rom-com The Wedding Singer — the duo’s first movie together. He also gave some insight into the iconic plane scene in which his character, Robbie, performs “Grow Old With You” to Barrymore’s character, Julia a.k.a the epic finale where Billy Idol helps save the day.

“I wasn’t allowed to sing ‘Grow Old With You’ to Drew before we sang at the actual [taping],” he revealed, to which she echoed, “Not once.”

Barrymore went on to say that her reaction to Sandler’s ballad was her “reaction on film for the first time,” adding that she did the same thing with “Forgetful Lucy” in 50 First Dates, when Sandler serenaded her with a ukulele at a Hawaiian zoo.

These two clearly still have chemistry. Let’s get them back on set for another rom-com, ASAP!
