Former Giants Minor Leaguer Solomon Bates Comes Out As Gay

Minor league pitcher Solomon Bates came out as gay in an Instagram post on Tuesday. 

Bates told Outsports that he came out to his teammates in 2019. 

Bates said. "I am a masculine guy who loves the sport of baseball, but now I want to open up to gay athletes like me."

Bates, an eighth-round pick of the San Francisco Giants in the 2018 draft, was released by the organization early Tuesday. In 43 ⅓ innings for Double-A Richmond, he pitched for a 3.74 ERA. 

"You never know what will happen to you being gay in this sport," Bates wrote on Instagram. “I am grateful to the Giants for giving me the opportunity to be myself and play the game I love the most. I am still shocked by what happened. No.I'm still going to open up to gay athletes like me.I'll still try to be one of the biggest to do it.I'm out there from my injury and my ass 

``Baseball is not over yet. Give me a chance and I can play a manly sport.Thank you Giants you guys made a new fan but gave me a tip to keep going I love all the new friends I made I I'm not going to cry.I'll keep pushing." 

Bates took to Twitter to write that supportive voices were "turning a sad day into a powerful day."”. 

Bates came out as gay, he is the second minor league player he is. Former Brewers prospect David Densonbecame the first openly gay player in franchise baseball in 2015. None of his active MLB players have come out as gay. 

In his 93 minor league appearances, Bates has a record of 17-6 and a Has his 4.30 ERA.
