MNF Preview: Rams vs 49ers
After witnessing one of the worst offensive displays in football, one that included dropping back across the endzone line for a safety, the 49ers should go back to their old ways by running the ball.
Last year the 49ers ran a conservative run-it-down-your-throat scheme that led them to the playoffs. With Trey Lance being out for the season, they bring back Jimmy G under center.
Under Lance, the 49ers were going to unlock a more modern style offense with a stronger arm and far superior dual-threat ability. Well, that’s out the window.
The issue at hand, though, is the offensive line took a massive blow by losing star offensive lineman Trent Williams to an apparent leg injury. Ruled out for a few weeks, Jimmy G is going to need to figure something out to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Another issue is that the Rams are the best run-stopping unit in football. With Aaron Donald and company eating up opposing linemen, the 49ers would be hard-pressed to find success on the ground.
Lucky for San Francisco, the Rams have struggled to stop the pass. Jimmy G is more than capable of slinging it through the air but has been prone to being conservative with dump-offs and slants across the middle.
I struggle to see how the 49ers are going to find success against the Rams’ defense, taking their team total prop under at anything better than 21.5 total points.
