HBO making Barry Bonds documentary with ‘Last Dance’ producers

HBO and Words + Pictures are currently producing an upcoming documentary centered on Barry Bonds.

The project is said to include “a diverse cast of influential figures from Barry Bonds’ life and career” in an effort to highlight “one of the greatest talents in the history of baseball, and one of the most compelling and polarizing figures in sports” throughout his 22-year baseball career.

The film, which remains untitled and does not yet have a release date, will be made by producers Connor Schell and Libby Geist from the highly popular “Last Dance” documentary series for ESPN that followed Michael Jordan and the Bulls as they chased their sixth NBA title in eight seasons.

Ezra Edelman, who is known for directing O.J.: Made in America, will be the executive producer.

It is directed by Keith McQuirter, who is known for “By Whatever Means Necessary: The Times of Godfather of Harlem.”

The seven-time MVP, 12-time Silver Slugger, and 14-time All-Star, certainly will bring a high interest by the numbers of his prolific career and stories off the diamond.

Bonds, 58, retired with the all-time career home runs record 762 home runs and 1,996 RBIs along with a career slash line of .298/.444/.607.

He is also the only MLB player to hit more than 500 home runs while also stealing more than 500 bases (514).

Bonds was one of baseball’s biggest names caught in the steroid scandal in the early 2000s, that many argue has spoiled his legacy and has kept him from being inducted into Baseball’s Hall of Fame on the standard ballot, which is voted on by various baseball media writers.

In January 2022, Bonds missed the last chance to get voted into the Hall of Fame on the standard ballot.

Bonds also did not receive enough votes on the Contemporary Baseball Era ballot in December.
