The new Hellraiser movie is coming to Hulu this Friday, which means it’s the perfect time for a Hellraiser movie marathon. The sooner you get started, the better—the 2022 movie is the 11th in the Hellraiser franchise, which adds up to quite a lot of viewing hours.
That said, you don’t have to watch all the Hellraiser movies in order to understand the new one. It’s being billed as “a new adaptation” of the 1986 novella, The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker, which Barker then made into a movie, the first Hellraiser, in 1987. It is, in other words, a remake.
But just because you don’t have to watch the first ten Hellraiser movies doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be a good time. The franchise centers on a puzzle box that, when used correctly, opens a gateway to a realm of demonic creatures called Cenobites, and their malevolent leader, Pinhead. The first film was known for its graphic, bloody, and disturbing depictions of horror. In fact, many of the most graphic scenes were cut by writer/director Clive Barker, in order to get an R-rating for the film.
Of course, there’s no better way to appeal to a horror audience than with blood and gore. The success of the first Hellraiser movie led to 10 more Hellraiser movies, including the one coming to Hulu this week. The first seven movies starred Doug Bradley as Pinhead, while actor Jamie Clayton is putting on the pins in the new one. Several of the Hellraiser films were rush jobs that were released straight to video, but, thankfully, all are available on streaming today. Quite a few of the Hellraiser movies are even streaming online for free, via ad-supported platforms like Tubi and PlutoTV.
