Justice Department seeks to unseal Trump search warrant

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department has asked courts to open search warrants received by the FBI before searching former President Donald Trump's Florida property, Attorney General Merrick Garland said Thursday.

Garland cited "substantial public interest in this matter" in announcing the request at a Justice Department press conference.

Garland also said he personally approved the search warrant. This was part of an ongoing Justice Department investigation into the discovery of classified White House records previously recovered from Trump's Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, Florida.

It was not immediately clear if or when an opening request filed in federal court in Miami would be granted or when the documents would be made public.
