Kellen Moore hired as Chargers offensive coordinator after Cowboys dismissal

Kellen Moore was not unemployed for long.

The former Cowboys offensive coordinator is taking the same job with the Los Angeles Chargers, according to multiple reports.

It was announced on Sunday that Moore and the Cowboys would be parting ways, with head coach Mike McCarthy taking over play-calling duties in Dallas. Less than 24 hours later, the 34-year-old coordinator landed on his feet with another playoff team – and arguably gets an even brighter young star quarterback to work with in Justin Herbert.

The Chargers let go of their offensive coordinator, Joe Lombardi, after a brutal wild-card playoff loss, in which Los Angeles blew a 27-0 lead to the Jaguars. Lombardi had also been criticized throughout his two-year tenure with the Bolts for being too conservative; Herbert’s intended air yards per pass attempt was 31st in the NFL in 2022, ahead of only Daniel Jones and Matt Ryan.

Moore, who had been the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator since 2019, is anything but. Prescott ranked 10th in the same statistic and fifth in 2019, which was his last fully healthy season before that.

Moore had interviewed for the Panthers’ head coaching vacancy, but it ended up going to former Colts coach Frank Reich.
