Kellen Moore out as Cowboys offensive coordinator after playoff letdown

Something had to change for the Dallas Cowboys. Whether it was this will certainly be a debated question this offseason.

The Cowboys’ playoff run came to a screeching halt against the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round, and after their 19-12 loss, the team is parting ways with offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, according to multiple reports.

Head coach Mike McCarthy will now call the plays on offense, according to the Dallas Morning News.

This comes after previous reports had Moore on the hot seat despite interviewing for head coach of the Carolina Panthers.

The Dallas Morning News adds that Moore’s future — along with the standing of the offensive coordinator position — had come into question over the course of this week. Owner Jerry Jones and executive vice president Stephen Jones ultimately decided that a change at OC was in the best interest of the Cowboys’ future. McCarthy called the plays during his 13 seasons with the Packers, but had given up the duties to Moore upon arrival in Dallas in 2020.

Moore, 34, had been named the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator in 2019 after one season of being the team’s quarterback coach. He also played backup quarterback for the team from 2015-17, which overlapped with Dak Prescott’s first two seasons as the Cowboys’ starter.

In Moore’s four seasons as offensive coordinator, the Cowboys made trips to the playoffs in 2021 and ’22. In both instances, they floundered at the feet of the 49ers, losing 23-17 in the wild-card round last year and, of course, their much-maligned defeat on Jan. 22.

Under offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, Cowboys starting quarterback Dak Prescott (4) threw a league-best 15 interceptions in just 12 games, and added two more in the playoffs.
