Liberty Score Final 13 Points to Win Game 1 of WNBA Playoffs vs. Sky

Chicago — Sabrina Ionescu had 22 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists while Natasha Howard had 22 points as No. 7 seed New York Liberty defended. Defeated champion Chicago Sky 98. On Wednesday night, in the opening of the WNBA playoffs, she posted a -91 in the game.

New York scored her 13 points in the final of the 4th quarter, while Chicago missed 10 of their final 11 shots. Ionescu made a 3-pointer and a jumper from the free-throw line during the run, while Marin Johannes highlighted a spurt with an over-the-shoulder pass to Howard.

"We were in this situation all year long, losing these games early on," he said Ionescu. "But we understood what it takes to win and we showed it tonight. We have to do it again."

After winning its first playoff game since Sept. 23, 2015, the Liberty will play Game 2 of the best-of-three series in Chicago on Saturday.

Betnija Rainey added 17 points and Stephanie Dolson scored 13 to set a franchise scoring record in the playoffs. Center Dolson made three of his four 3-pointers to help Liberty go 11-for-25 from distance.

Kahleah Copper led the second seed her Sky with 21 points. Allie Quigley had 18 points, Candace Parker had 17 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists, and Courtney Vanderthroat had 13 points and 10 assists.

Chicago took its first lead in the second half, 74-73, and left his second on Emma Miesmann's layup in the third quarter. Quigley sank a 3-pointer during a foul and free scored on his throw to give Chicago he had an 85-81 lead, with Parker adding a putback on Sky's next possession, leaving him with 6: At 36 he had a 6-point lead.
