Melanie Lynskey and Jason Ritter Barely Hold Back Their Tears While Discussing His Struggles With Alcoholism on ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’

If there’s any safe place to get emotional and vulnerable, it’s The Drew Barrymore Show. During a recent episode, actor Jason Ritter joined his wife Melanie Lynskey in an interview where he got emotional while discussing his past struggles with alcoholism.

While Ritter said he “knew how incredible” Lynskey was early on, he admitted the start of their relationship was “messy and interesting and weird” as he was dealing with “some alcoholism issues.”

“I knew how amazing she was and I thought she would be incredible for someone who deserved her, basically,” he said of the Yellowjackets star as he began to get choked up. “And I didn’t feel like I was that person.”

Ritter continued, “So it was only after maybe a year into not drinking that I started to go, ‘Oh, maybe I can promise some things to someone else. Maybe I can be this person.'”

Meanwhile, Lynskey was tearing up herself as she pointed out, “He worked so hard. He did so much work on himself. I’m so proud of him,” before joking, “Sorry. [The interview’s] gonna get more fun.”

Drew Barrymore brushed off her Ever After costar’s comment, telling her, “This is the fun,” as she revealed that while she’s “not sober” and doesn’t “work a program,” she hasn’t had a drink in almost four years.

“The narrative that one creates is that I can’t be with someone. And I haven’t been in a relationship since I stopped drinking,” she said. “I’m really looking forward to one day not having that bad girl narrative, the instability, the ‘I’m not someone who’s right to be with anyone for their sake.'”

Following the emotional interview, Ritter reposted a clip of his chat on the show, which he captioned, “Thank you @DrewBarrymoreTV for having us!! And for the space to talk about things like this! And thank you @melanielynskey for having me in the first place.”
