Micah Shrewsberry set to take over as Notre Dame basketball coach

Micah Shrewsberry will be the next head coach of Notre Dame, according to multiple reports on Wednesday.

The 46-year-old Indianapolis native will sign a seven-year deal to helm the Irish, according to ESPN, after turning down a big-money long-term extension from Penn State.

Shrewsberry will replace Mike Brey, who stepped down as Notre Dame coach after 23 seasons, a span in which he helmed the Fighting Irish to 13 NCAA tournaments, three Sweet 16 appearances and a pair of Elite Eights.

In two seasons at Penn State, Shrewsberry went 37-31 and this season led the Nittany Lions to their first NCAA tournament since 2011 following a second-place finish in the Big Ten tournament to Purdue.

Penn State, a No. 10 seed, toppled No. 7 Texas A&M in the first round — its first March Madness win since 2001 — but couldn’t get past second-seeded Texas in the Round of 32.

“I told these guys after the game, like, you can’t take this for granted, right?,” Shrewsberry said after the loss to Texas. “I’ve been in programs that, they go to the tournament every single year and it looks really easy from the outside, but nobody knows or appreciates the hard work that they put in. It’s these guys, like, what they’re doing, the hard work that they put in to get here.

“It’s been a joy for me to just be on this ride with them and watch ’em, and watch what they’ve accomplished.”

As of Wednesday evening, Shrewberry was no longer listed among the Penn State basketball coaching staff.

Shrewsberry climbed the ranks as a coach at Indiana schools after playing at Hanover State: he served as an assistant at Wabash and DePauw, before spending two seasons as head coach at Indiana University South Bend.

He then had assistant coaching roles at Butler, Purdue, the NBA’s Boston Celtics and Purdue again before taking over in State College in 2021.

His offenses at Purdue were noted for being consistently effective, a trait he brought to Penn State, where the Nittany Lions had the 13th-ranked offensive in adjusted efficiency.

Shrewsberry’s son, Micah, committed to Penn State as the first player in the class of 2023.

Notre Dame is expected to announce Shrewsberry as the school’s 18th head coach on Friday, and introduce him to media on Monday.
