A mother died Thursday after lightning struck near a Florida park, local officials said. Her child was also hospitalized for the strike, but the child's current condition is not clear. It said it responded to reports that several people were struck by lightning near the city. Authorities provided "immediate life-saving assistance" to the mother and child, and both were hospitalized.
Authorities did not disclose the victim's name out of respect for their privacy, saying, "City officials extend their deepest condolences to the bereaved family and their thoughts and concerns during this difficult time. I will keep praying," he added.

Lightning strikes are rare, but according to the CDC the odds of being struck by lightning are less than 1 in a million, but multiple people have already died this year. . Earlier this month, a lightning strike in Washington, D.C.killed three people and seriously injured another. A few weeks ago, lightning strikes killed soldiers at a Georgia Army base.
Nearly every state reports lightning strikes, but the CDC calls Florida the nation's "lightning capital." Incidence of lightning damage over the past 50 years citing over 2,000 recorded cases. More than 30 people have died in strikes in Florida, according to the CDC.
