Pregnant sea lion crashed into a golf tournament before returning to the sea

Carlsbad, CA, – Pregnant sea lions canceled a charity golf tournament on Thursday. Golfers didn't play when they found a 6-foot long animal weighing over 200 pounds on the 16th green at the upscale Omnira Costa Resort and Spa in San Diego County.

The resort immediately called SeaWorld San Diego and dispatched a rescue team. The resort is 3 miles away from the coast, but rescue teams arrive at FOX5-San Diego , her mother probably via the lagoon, up to about a mile away. "I walked," he said. course.

The chief rescue team brought in a truck because they felt they were too far away to "shoot" the sea lions into the sea. However, the animal turned in the opposite direction. The SeaWorld team provided golfers and ground crew with simple lessons on safe rescue and shield distribution. Humans surrounded the sea lions and trapped them in trucks.

A Sea World spokesman told FOX5 that sea lions rarely make sea lions inland, far from the shore. She said the sea lions may have eaten something in the lagoon.

The team released the animals at nearby Carlsbad State Beach, where she swam in the waves among the cheering spectators. The vet feels she won't take so long until she returns to the beach to give birth.

According to the SeaWorld website, her mother gives birth on land, cares for her baby for a few days, goes out to sea a few miles later to fish, and returns a few days later. Most California sea lions give birth to a puppy in June. Nursing lasts 6 to 12 months.

Rescuers who removed the sea lion from the course release the animal back into the ocean.

It is illegal to feed sea lions. NOAA Fisheries warns that feeding sea lions can allow them to become accustomed to humans until the animals chase after them. Feeded sea lions can become aggressive and even chew.

NOAA advises humans to stay at least 150 feet away from mammals.  California sea lions are not endangered, but are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

SeaWorld reported that the mother looked healthy.
