Prince William, Kate in ‘argument’ about George’s coronation role: report

Prince William and Kate Middleton are reportedly in an “argument” over their oldest son Prince George planned appearance at King Charles’ “more inclusive” coronation on May 6.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are “worried that it will be too much for” the 9-year-old, according to royal commentator Tom Quinn.

The “Gilded Youth: A History of Growing Up in the Royal Family” author gave his hot take to the UK’s Express on Sunday, alleging that “there is a bit of an argument going on about whether George should play a more formal role” in the official crowning of King Charles, 74.

Quinn claimed that William, 40, and Middleton, 41, are anxious over George’s role, hoping that it won’t paint a negative picture of the child in the eyes of the public.

The writer also noted that the pair are uneasy about George’s role because they feel like their son could still be too young to take on a more royal duties.

“It’s almost an echo of the way William and [Prince] Harry were sometimes made to attend formal occasions that they shouldn’t have been made to attend,” Quinn said, referencing how William and his younger brother, 38, undertook many royal engagements in their younger years.

Prince George’s formal role during King Charles’ coronation has caused worry with his parents.

One of the most famous events that a teen William and an adolescent Harry were forced to endure was the 1997 funeral for their mother Princess Diana.

The brothers were seen walking behind her coffin alongside the rest of the royal family.

“A lot of people criticized that and said that it was a horrible thing to make two boys that young, and especially Harry, do,” Quinn said.

He continued: “So I think people are remembering this and thinking, ‘Well hang on a minute, if George is some sort of a pageboy, or has a similar role at the coronation, is that going back too far towards the traditional roles?'”

“There is a debate going on quite fiercely at the moment about how to do that. And, as far as I’ve heard, it hasn’t been decided yet,” Quinn alleged.

George and his younger sister Princess Charlotte as well as their youngest brother Prince Louis have made several official appearances in recent years.

George and Charlotte, 7, attended the funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth last September and they also appeared at her Platinum Jubilee in June.

They also served as pageboy and flower girl at Harry and his wife Meghan Markle’s 2018 wedding.

UK outlets reported on Saturday the leaked plans showing the children’s proposed roles in the coronation.

Plans showed that George, Charlotte and Louis, 5, are set to join William and Middleton in a carriage behind a Gold State Coach transporting Charles and Camilla, Queen Consort.
