Rookie Mekhi Becton only Jet to kneel for national anthem

INDIANAPOLIS – The Jets’ big rookie made a big statement Sunday.

Mekhi Becton took a knee during the national anthem before the Jets game against the Colts at Lucas Oil Field. It was the first time the Jets were on the field for the anthem this season. They chose to stay in the locker room before their first two games.

The rest of the Jets, including CEO and chairman Christopher Johnson, stood and linked arms along the sideline. Becton was the only player to take a knee.

The Jets have been discussing ways to enact change after police shootings this summer. They canceled one training camp practice in August to have day-long talks. The team has been very vocal about bringing light to social justice issues.

Becton was taken No. 11 overall in April’s draft by the Jets.
