Russia withdraws from Ukraine's Zmiinyi Island

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on Thursday that it would withdraw from Ukraine's Zmiinyi Island.

Russia used the Black Sea island near the port city of Odesa as a setting after occupying the Black Sea island in the early stages of the war, which began in late February.

Thursday's announcement came after the Ukrainian army's attack on Russia's position on the island.

Russia has shown that the move is a "good faith gesture" and does not impede the UN's efforts to establish a corridor for exporting Ukrainian grain products.

Andriy Yermak, head of the office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiyy, confirmed the withdrawal of Russian troops from the island. "There are no more Russian troops on Snake Island. Our troops did a great job," Yermak said in a Twitter post.

Also on Thursday, the UK announced an additional $ 1 billion in aid to Ukraine.

The office of Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the funds would go to air defense systems, unmanned aerial vehicles and important equipment of the Ukrainian army.

"This is the first to allow Ukraine to go beyond brave defenses against Russia's illegal aggression and launch offensive operations against the Russian Army to restore Ukraine's sovereignty. It represents a step, "the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement. ..

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called Britain a "true friend and strategic partner" and said he was grateful for his security support.

"Thank you for your consistent leadership support in combating the Russian invasion," Zelensky tweeted.
